Jarvis Varnado's 165th Career Block

This is an Associated Press photo that's making the rounds on the internet but is a fabulous photo if you study the compostion and color and line. Did I mention Jarvis was the MVP of the SEC Tournament in Tampa? He recorded 22 blocks in four games in this tournament and broke Shaquille O'Neal's career block record by 8 in this tournament. He only needs 144 more blocks to be the all-time NCAA block leader.

Rowdies in Tampa

The photo basically speaks for itself--if you'd been there, Camille, we wouldn't have asked him to pose w/us--we just went crazy for a minute.

Big Blue Elvis

Not a pretty sight but you have to admit, he's been working on his style for awhile.

Parade Addicts

There's nothing like a parade to get our attention. We stumbled into the best one we'd even seen in Ybor City--pronouced "E-Boar" and lasted nearly two hours. We have never seen so many beads thrown in our lives. We haven't been to tons of parades so we thought we were at the best one EVER. WE just had to set the self-timer to our picture.

We're Going Dancin'

Who knew a month ago that Mississippi Stat would win the SEC Tournament and get an automatic bid to the Big Dance? Well, I did my part to make it happen. I booked our trip home from Tampa at noon so there would be no way we could see or hear any part of the championship game. When we got home, I turned off my phone so I would see the incoming calls as there would be a complete giveaway on who won. See, my dearest friends don't or can't call until we win and if I saw who'd called after the game I would know who won and watching the game via Tivo would not be a surprise. The problem is that I would not want to watch a tivoed game that we lost--I don't watch or read about losses. Soooo, to make a long story short, my dear Wunderchildren recorded the game while we were flying home and invited us over to watch it and drink a little wine. That was a big, big hint that we'd won. Friends don't let friends watch losses you see. We watched, we couldn't believe what we were seeing and we were glad we weren't there. Dean would have had a heart attack, stroke or arrest due to the weird officiating. Real child, Camille, was mad because she couldn't get in touch w/us but got over it when she realized what were were doing.

Beale Street Music Festival

Will be a lot of fun this year. I hear there are people coming here from all over the country. I can't wait to find out the lineup. It will also be Casper's 11th birthday weekend so lots of celebrations will be in order.

Snow and the Bulldogs

This morning we awoke to the beauty of snow and it even landed on our concrete bulldog on the front porch. It is March 1, 2009 and was a real surprise. It was raining when we went to bed and awoke to find a two-inch covering of everything in Starkville. If you thought Starkville was beautiful BEFORE--you would really be awed by this pretty snowfall. As we drove north toward home today the snowfall got less and less and then when we hit the Red Banks Road it became obvious that we were in much deeper snow and in fact, when we pulled in our driveway, we had about 5 inches of snow on our house and in our yard. The last snow of this magnitude here was in 1988 when we were out in Colorado skiing and Eleanor was keeping Camille (and I am sure Lindsay, too) and took pictues of Camille on her red American Flyer sled for us. She never used the sled again as it never snowed that much again. The last time it snowed in Memphis was March of 1958 and I will talk more about that event later this month. The Bulldog Baseball team took two Saturday and the cagers lost. Today they opponent baseball team forfeited to us in a rare and somewhat controversial event. We said they forfeited. They said the game was cancelled. The NCAA said we won. That is the law.
